The Road to Santo Tomas

Our trip to Peru has two main areas of focus.  One is the work at Josephine House in the Cusco area.  The other is a town called Santo Tomas in the hinterland region of the Andes.  Three team members will go there.  Southwood Presbyterian Church is partnering with a national church in that town.  The team will continue to build relationships that were forged by our Vision Team last fall.

This post includes pictures and quotes from the Vision Team to hopefully give you a sense of how they will get there.

The road to Santo Tomas is bumpy and windy with many switchbacks at times.

The Andes Mountains run the entire length of South America, from the humid tropics of the Caribbean to the ice fields of Patagonia.  The Andes is the largest north-south mountain range in the world.

These prayer rocks to Pachamama (mother earth) and various other gods were not stacked by the vision team.

Towns they went through included Quiquijana, Cuispata (Happy Hill), Occobamba, Checacupe, Hercca, Kanturakanki District (elevation 14,100 feet), Checca, Descanso, Laramani, and others.

Lovely herds of llamas, alpaca, and sheep graze on the mountainside along the way.

Every now and then a random shepherd or shepherdess can be seen.

Lunch break.

Shepherd's bed.

Check out the altimeter in this shot!  If the altitude in Cusco gets to you, this trip won't help!

The next post will take a tour of Santo Tomas and we'll meet some of the people our team will meet.
